On Tuesday, we will swear into office the 44th President of the United States.
12 of these 44 Presidents have owned slaves, 8 of them while in office.
Another fact that makes Tuesday even more interesting.

A discussion of politics, policy and culture
Question? Have all of the slaves owned by our Presidents been of African descent? Did they all have a darker skin tone?

ReplyDeleteI don't understand what all the fuss seems to be about. The United States is one of the only first rate countries in the world that seems to keep bringing slavery (a long dead practice in said country) up as a current social issue.
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans also used to hold slaves, sometimes they even held their own countrymen in bondage.
Recently the Soviet Union held entire countries in addition to most of it's own population as slave labor.
I'm not justifying slavery in any shape or form, I find it utterly despicable. I also believe that it should not be a forgotten era in American history else we are doomed to repeat it. But I do believe that if we are to obtained 'change' as promised, we need to get past certain issues.
it just goes to show how the united states has changed in the last 200 years. it shows how our cultures ideology has changed in those 200 years and how whats right seems to always come first. It shows that America is always going to keep moving forward and that it will always be a place for people (if they choose) to prosper
ReplyDeletethe problem in the united states is everyone is so focused on the me aspect. we are a land of polar opposites and by our constitution and law we have to allow it. to many people use the past to justify their current ignorance
ReplyDeleteI feel that this presidency is a testament to the changes our country has gone threw culturally and socioeconomically. We shown the ability to view our mistakes in history and learn from them.
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting fact. Culture drives politics and it is a repeated cycle. Look at all the women currently involved in politics and how hard they fought for a voice. America should be given the benefit of the doubt and credit for moving past our "failures" and learning.
ReplyDeletei think that it is an amazing piece of history that we have elected a black president. seeing as how the white house had 5 slave carpenters that helped build it. there was also slaves that were used to cut stone for government buildings, including the White House, when our country was being built. Example; (Even though Thomas Jefferson said that slavery was an "assemblage of horrors" he still brought his slaves to the white house when he moved in.) In conclusion it has been a long time but is still a great piece of history.
ReplyDeleteOne of the remarkable things about Obama becoming President is that years and years of strife is finally coming to a conclusion with President Obama taking the highest office. Just to think that in his fathers day. He would have had to use a colored bathroom. Restraunts. Give up his seat to a white person. By no means does this mean prejudice is over with yet what a great significant achievment! We are basically a nation of immigrants yet African Americans have had to struggle more for eqaulity.. Talk about goosebumps watching the inaugration today.
ReplyDeleteAs America proceeds over the years we are becoming more accepting of race and religion. It is a good thing that some Americans can put the past behind them and learn to move on and accept what the future holds. I feel Obama has alot to hold for the upcoming years and will have success for a change because we need it.
ReplyDeleteI don't see the big deal here. Times were surely differnt when slaves were held by presidents. To hold this against a former president, would be absurd.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as if everything has come full circle for African Americans, from being slaves to segregation. Now an African American is the President of the United States. It gives a lot of hope to many people living in this nation as a minority. The inauguration was a powerful event to watch!
ReplyDeleteLooking back it seems easy to criticize a President for owning slaves. The fact of the matter is that we look back at our Founding Father's as men who helped to shape and form this great country that I a citizen of.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to remember that most of these men put thier lives, and everything they owned (including slaves) to help form the foundations of our great country.
